BioBag – sort and compost bio-waste cleanly and odourlessly

Every year, 120-130 tons of bio-waste is generated in Estonia, of which only 30% is recycled. The remaining bio-waste is landfilled or incinerated. However, bio-waste is a very valuable resource because it can be reused.

Bio-waste can be produced:

Compost, which can introduce nutrients into soil and improve soil structure and biota.
Biogas used for electricity generation, household heating or as a car fuel.

If biowaste is disposed as a mixed municipal waste, then:

Biowaste ends up in an incineration or landfill, where decomposition releases methane, which is 20 times stronger than a greenhouse gas CO2

Which container is best for collecting bio-waste?

Food waste contains a large amount of water and therefore begins to ferment quickly in a closed container. This creates an unpleasant odour and moisture. In order not to make the collection of bio-waste unpleasant and inconvenient, it is recommended to collect it in a ventilated container with a breathable compostable garbage bag.

Which garbage bag is suitable for collecting bio-waste?

Only biodegradable or paper bags are suitable for packaging bio-waste. Be sure to dispose of bio-waste in a container in a normal plastic bag as it will not break down. Although plastic bags are usually obtained during the production process, pieces of microplastic may be formed during the mechanical treatment, which cannot be separated from the compost soil later. In this way, the microplastic enters the soil and from there into the food chain.

Also, not every biodegradable bag is suitable for packaging biowaste, because depending on the raw material, it breaks down into either organic or microplastic. Therefore, always check the packaging to make sure that the biobag is compostable and decomposes completely during composting.
